Macramé for kids - heart coaster
A simple macramé heart tutorial that even children from about 6 years old can handle. It seems a new generation of little macramé makers is growing up 😉
A macramé heart and making it is a creative activity for all patient moms. We managed it, and how about you?
What we will need:
- 3mm macramé cord VEĽKÁvlna (brushable)
- a measuring tape
- sharp scissors
- a brush for combing out
- a stick, a hanger, something sturdy you can knot on
- at least 2 children - 6 years and older (after 20 minutes 1 child will lose interest, you'll have to swap)
- and above all LOTS OF PATIENCE :)
Step 1
First we prepare 12 pieces of 75cm cords and 8 pieces of 16cm macramé cords. Follow the video and tie 10 of the longer cords onto the stick. A 9-year-old child handled this activity with complete ease.
Step 2
We have the cords divided into groups of 4, we flip the 4 middle strings up, we don't work with them yet in this step and we start with the actual macramé knotting, follow the procedure in the video.
Step 3
We still have two 75cm cords left, now we add them to both ends. Now it's the turn of the 4 middle strings that we didn't use in the previous step, we add them to the other cords and again knot in groups of 4 strings.
Tip: since 2 hands are not enough for kids doing macramé, you can also help with a foot to hold the cords while tying :D With smaller children you'll probably have to help them tighten.
Step 4
On both edges we set 2 strings aside and knot again.
Step 5
In this step we first work with the set-aside pairs of strings. On the outermost string on both sides we add two 16cm cords and then again form groups of 4 strings and knot (again with all the cords) .

Step 7
The moment comes when you need to swap the child, because the first one is starting to melt down, saying they're already bored and it still doesn't look like a heart. Two more enthusiastic children (6 years old) come onto the scene and you explain from the beginning. One gives up right away and the other lasts about 3-4 rows. Then you can try approaching the first child and suggest finishing the macramé heart... I, however, did not succeed :D In this step we add the remaining pairs of shorter cords to the outermost string, form groups of four and knot.
Step 8
On both edges we set 2 strings aside and knot again. We repeat this procedure all the way to the end, until we've tied the last group of four.
Finishing touches to the macramé heart
The macramé heart is almost done, following the video we cut our heart off the stick, trim the cords to about 4cm length, comb them out with the brush and finally trim them with scissors into a heart shape.
